What is Neuro-Linguistic Programming?

Neuro-Linguistic Programming, or NLP, is a technology of the mind founded by Richard Bandler, John Grinder, Robert Dilts, and many other in the early-1970s.

Taken literally, the definition of NLP is:

  • Neuro: Having to do with our nervous system, in which our experience is filtered through our senses:
    • Visual
    • Auditory
    • Kinesthetic
    • Olfactory
    • Gustatory
  • Linguistic: Having to do with our language - both verbal and nonverbal - through which our internal representations of the world are encoded, organized and given meaning:
    • Pictures
    • Sounds
    • Feelings

  • Programming: Having to do with the discovery and use of the programs we run in our own minds – and the minds of others – to achieve our

So, NLP is about learning how to use the language of the mind to produce behavior that ultimately achieves our desired outcomes.
